Oddity by Alexa

13 Nov

So I was looking at the subdomain breakdown of Google via Alexa. The fourth most popular is Video, with Google Maps (and local) coming in at #8. Even more oddly Google Maps only had 1% of visits, with Video pulling in 3%. And even more perplexing Google Maps falls behind Picasa, Groups, and Translate (wha?!?)

Either Alexa is waaaaay off the rocker … or the uptake on local is weaker than thought.

…when has Alexa not been “waaaaay off the rocker”?

I have never trusted Alexa rankings or data as it’s way off many times. On top of that, Alexa rankings can easily be manipulated and are indeed manipulated by many sites to a certain point.

Alexa’s wrong. Picasa can’t possibly be more popular than Google Maps. Local search isn’t weaker than you thought. Good luck with iBegin.

It looks to me like an accurate stat. I just checked it against the local Google sites like Australia, New Zealand and the UK and Maps was only running at 1% on those sites as well. This Hitwise analysis from 2006 (http://weblogs.hitwise.com/bill-tancer/2006/05/google_yahoo_and_msn_property.html) shows that maps aren’t that popular and that Google Maps isn’t even doing that well within the category.

Alexa is about as worthless as a leprechaun on a basketball court.

In general Alexa is off, but (when it comes to large sites) isn’t too way off. I’m just surprised that the sample set Alexa does use has Maps so low.

I guess I’ll wait for the next google traffic breakdown.
