American Airlines Refund Scam

24 May
2010

I bought a one-way refundable ticket from NYC to Toronto. 7 days before the flight I went through their AA Refunds website. It told me there was no information on my ticket, and thus it could only “watch” and let me know when an update came.

Checking every 24 hours, 3 days later a “Manual Review” was added.

And that was it. The phone number on provided just tells me to use their website. No refund seems to have been processed, and using the refund site now shows no information on my ticket. Customer Support keeps telling me there is nothing they can do. A refundable ticket that can’t be refunded.

Thoughts?

Absolutely scam. Most consumers would simply drop the issue and not recommend AA to their friends.

Others may try to talk to an ombudsman or alternate consumer protection agency (if one exists).

Perhaps depends on how much time and energy one is willing to put into this, or chalk it up to another example of terrible AA service and avoid them in the future, even if they promise cheaper flights.

There’s always a backcharge through the credit card company that you used to pay for the ticket.

American Airlines is the worst airline in the industry. They have been taking advantage of people for years, and took the US for countless millions after 9/11 and never re-invested any of the money into fixing their airline. They will keep people on hold for up to 50 minutes, and then just disconnect the call. The refund department is a hoax, and they will also keep you on hold for 40-45 minutes without ever actually doing anything once they get on the phone! The only thing that they will tell you is to fax / mail your request in.

DO NOT FLY THIS AIRLINE! IF YOU WISH TO TRAVEL THERE ARE DOZENS OF OPTIONS, AND MOSTLY ALL OTHER AIRLINES (Delta excluded) WILL ACTUALLY VALUE YOU AS A CUSTOMER. ALL PEOPLE SHOULD BOPYCOTT THIS AIRLINE!

Like all airlines there’s plenty trouble with Delta, too — but for this particular thing (canceling tickets) they’ve been really easy to work with.

Hope you are well! :-)

here’s a good one!
bought a round trip ticket on AA, then payed $35.00 extra for the “flexability” option. This meant no change fees for changing the flight. The night before my return flight i called to change to an earlier flight on the same day. They told me it would be an extra $700.00. SAME FLIGHT FOUR HOURS EARLIER! They said this was not the change fee, that had been waived.
The next day i was flying Southwest, got to the airport early, they put me on an earlier flight, and gave me a $15.00 REFUND!
AA sucks.
