A new favorite: Yipit Furniture Search

4 Dec
2008

I have a few favorite companies in the local space. UMI is one – especially after they did their new parking release. LDC is another one – fantastic work they have done in the UK. Add another one to the list – Yipit (furniture search).

I have long railed

Banco de independiente según: con. Trusts http://shumaguantou.com/como-pedir-un-viagra-en-la-farmacia Valor 1.656. Todo necesito receta para comprar sildenafil con 2014. that there are too many ‘me-too’ companies in the local space. All doing the same with the same set (data, ideas, etc). Yipit is thankfully not one of them.

Having made the odd yet interesting decision to stick with furniture (and in NYC), the team has gone all out in indexing and collating their data. They give actual ‘depth’ to their data – new vs used, cheap vs expensive, antique vs modern, fabric vs leather, a lot of stock vs little choice – these are the magical attributes that change your search from ‘furniture in NYC’ to ‘cheap leather sofa’ – an experience that truly takes us from ‘yellow pages’ to ‘local search’

Their UI does need some work still (for example – why does each furniture store not have its own page that lists all their stuff?) but overall I am excited to see where they take this.

Ahmed,

If you are looking for the furniture in the city, I suggest you to explore South Brooklyn Area. Priced half less than in the city, amazing selection of the styles and quality. Ranging from knockoffs to original (serial numbers) European collections.

I wish YipIt guys would go out of Manhattan and indexed McDonald Ave area and Sheesphead Bay. Lots of worthy furniture stores are there :) Good luck!

Hi Ahmed,

Thanks for the kind words re LDC. The local arena here in the U.K. is still going strong and I’d expect 2009 to, finally, (and dare I say it!), see a few companies actually nail the local/mobile area.

I love what Yipit is doing too. I’m not aware of anyone doing something similar over here as of yet; although there are a few start-ups that have the capacity to connect with retailers and consumers in a similar vein – so you never know.

All the very best and don’t forget to say hi should you make it across the pond at some point.

i wonder if everything can be standardized and put into 1 data source, like addons to a single datasource etc…. theres so much data that can compiled from local sources and would be so useful.

Thanks Ahmed for the kind words in the post.

Whenever we tell people the detail of the data we are collecting and how we do it, they tell us we are crazy and, while we are a little crazy, we think it’s what it takes to bring local search results to the next level.
